Marla Turner with Hakan Turan aka 9

9: What brought you to Nublu?

Marla: ...Through my twin brother Marlon, he told me that Ilhan was looking for a lead singer.

9: Was Nublu open then?

Marla: No, you were painting it, i think.

9: What were you doing those days?

Marla: I was playing drums in 2 bands, I can't remember the names, but, basically it was bullshit 1 and
bullshit 2.

9: Wasn't Marlon the drummer of Wax Poetic?

Marla: That was before I met Ilhan.

9: A typically boring question for you; when did you start rolling down the path of the glorious?

Marla: I grew up singing at school and church, not professionally till 5 years ago.

9: Did you go in the studio straight away or on the road with Wax Poetic when you joined in?

Marla: Ilhan wanted me to record 1 song called Beauty... then the whole album came.

9: When did you start contributing lyrics for the songs?

Marla: Ilhan had some vague ideas about lyrics, but, soon enough it was obvious that I couldn't sing other people's words.

9: What's that album called?

Marla: Now it's called, I don't know, actually.

9: What have you got released so far?

Marla: I released a song on Love Trio Album called Love, another on Della and Love on Nublu Sessions, rub a dub style with Love Trio feat. Uroy.

9: Where is your favorite place to perform?

Marla: Turkey, because i felt love once the airplane landed. Strangers embraced me.

As a performer i prefer a big stage, More people can hear & see. It's challenging for me to get up in front of all these people.

9: What's Nublu's contribution to the artistic community today in lower east side?

Marla: Nublu in Marla Turner's own words... Nublu is situated on sacred grounds. It's a vortex. It takes a special amount of sensitivity to capture it. Ilhan did this. From his desires, he has put faith in himself and has opened the door for other free spirits. That is why, it is infectious and that's why we all keep going.

9: Favorite thing going on for you in nublu these days?

Marla: I am partial to Real Live show, for these reasons; the crowd is subdued and tranced by the beats. I look around and I see a lot of closed eyes.

9: What drives you musically in terms of it's sheer nature as an instrument?

Marla: The ability of sound to touch my emotions. A good song lasts.

9: How do you reflect your emotions in the format of a song, in other words, how do you capture the essence of the song as it inspires you?

Marla: Writing the song and then performing it?

9: What are your songs about?

Marla: I tend to write about things that happened in my past that need to come out, i.e. I need to find closure, because sometimes it's a direct reflection of my personality today. It yields evolution...

9: Which one is more important? Idea or matter?

Marla: Both. Ideas because it's an extension of thoughts that has been brought to life. Matter, because, you are able to sprinkle seeds of growth which could otherwise be stifled.

9: In that line what sets the balance for life?

Marla: Truth with yourself, the ability to accept truth from others and the ability to change.

9: Can you gimme a good example for the human potential for change?

Marla: I will use myself as an example. I often listen to the message that I relay through others, once, I start hearing my own self versus listening and, or, reacting to other people's reactions then I know that it's time for me to move on. In other words, when my effect wears off.

9: Who is responsible for the death and decay of culture?

Marla: Culture is threatened by many things? First, those who do not set the reality that everyone is great for many reasons. They are tormented with envy, greed and jealousy and will by all means sabotage anything that's worthwhile... The urgency of evolution. Also , they will sabotage the need for acceptance. We are filtered with deception. And we are manipulated with control. Our leaders are not leaders for all men, they are leaders for themselves. There is a vicious cycle that inhibits the acceleration of mixing and of dissecting, accepting differences. So, for these reasons many of us are not free but are captive in a web of insecurity.

9: What is culture?

Marla: Culture in my own words is the ability to walk down a dark road with your arms spread wide. It's the ability to first close your eyes, then your mind, but leave the heart open. And then allow your senses and emotions and desires and fears and hopes to explore. Then, and only then will you be able to open your eyes and see that you have been consumed.

9: What is necessary for the overcoming people?

Marla: Defiance of who we think we are, what we think we know which yields the necessity of humility, growth, renewal, rebirth. It can only occur we all agree that something is not right.

9: What do you find frustrating in your current milieu?

Marla: People tend to adorn their safety nets and reinforce them daily. Humans walk around with facades greater than buildings. Sometimes, it;s difficult for me to simply walk in a deli: only tourists these days in NY bump into you as they pass you, but, "the new yorkers" demolish you with their regrets of their situation alone. Then the aftermath induces a strong sensation of sorrow and sadness. That's why it grieves me that people seldom take the time to breathe and at last let go. This inhibits truth and acceptance of reality and the need for communicating what's actual.
I am left with an array of thick buildings to tell them about my day.

9: Is it fair to call New York city a vampire?

Marla: A vampire? I would prefer the term sucker.
